The Landing Channel Each morning the team transfers from ship to shore, landing through this channel which was dynamited into the reef in 1963. At low tide, shown here, getting from boat to reef is tricky; at high tide the boat can sometimes run onto the sand. At mid-tide cross seas and rips are common, as is high surf. In the Village The village on Nikumaroro was abandoned in 1964 due to drought. This is one of the few buildings left standing, a concrete block kitchen which was attached to the Government House. The Seven Site This photo shows the Seven Site cleared for work in 2001. The tank in the foreground was apparently placed there as a temporary cistern by villagers who found the bones in 1940.
