Friday, July 16, 1937.   We are off to the last group of Gilbert Islands this morning, including a visiting party on the island of Tarawa where the British Commissioner lives. … [A] tall well-built, gray-haired bespectacled shorts-wearing gentleman — Maj C A Swinbourne of His Majesty’s Crown Colonial Service — greeted us. Introductions followed and we were off to his residence. … Graciously our host made us comfortable and explained hearing nothing of the Earhart plane en route nor after it was reported down.”
