would drive the plane westward, the plane would have traveled approximately 2700 miles. Hence, the decision to search the northwest area immediately, though based purely on meager radio information and assumptions, was quite logical.

The rest of the search is now history. What was expected to be a 5,000 mile trip by the Itasca on a regular colonist replacement and supplies’ cruise to the U.S. equatorial islands turned out to be a 36 day trip in search of a pair of daring American aviators whose fate only the stoic Pacific understands.
